Blowing Out The Candles…

It was my birthday yesterday but, for the first time I can remember, I didn’t have a birthday cake so I didn’t blow out any candles… mind you, it could have been a bit of a fire hazard with sixty-five of them!!!! So why have I called this blog Blowing Out the Candles? Well, instead of just receiving presents for my birthday, I thought I would give one too, this Yankee Candle large jar in a lovely summery fragrance – more of that later.

Taking of fragrance, at present, my house is like walking into a florist shop! My family know I love flowers, so each treated me to a beautiful bouquet. The first was from my husband, Chris and for the first time in a while featured lilies which I love. We haven’t been able to have them while Wilfie the cat was living with us, although I must say that was a small price to pay for the joy he brought us.

Apparently, he is settling in well in his new home with our son and his girlfriend, whose bouquet of flowers arrived while we were out looking at new sofas… more on that in a future blog. Beautiful roses in shades of deep pink and mauve, white daisies and… more lilies! There was also a small box of chocolates which we have yet to tuck into. We didn’t see them on my birthday as we were supposed to be getting together this weekend – unfortunately, that plan has had to change due to circumstances beyond our control but at least we have What’s App and Facetime!

We did however see our daughter, Sophie and her partner, Reece in the evening. They arrived to pick us up and take us out for dinner with another beautiful bouquet of flowers, this time featuring more roses and lilies, but also peonies, stocks, ranunculus and so much more. I ended up splitting the bouquets between six vases: two in the lounge, two in the family room, one in our bedroom and one on the dining table. Like I said, it’s like walking into a florist at the moment. It was so lovely to go ‘out out’ for dinner. We hadn’t been since before the first lockdown, so it felt like a real treat. I actually wore mascara for the first time since my cataract operation just to see if my eye would react. It didn’t which is great news and hopefully means I’ll be able to go back to my ‘day’ job at QVC in a week or so.

Chris bought me some lovely gifts, including a pretty cotton dress, some trainers with sparkly stars on them, a yoga mat and bottle (what is he trying to say I wonder?) and this little wall plaque. It has taken up the final bit of space on my downstairs loo wall… I’ll have to fine a new wall in a different room!

Of course, not only was it my birthday, it would have been Prince Philip’s 100th birthday. I really felt for Her Majesty as the first birthday without a loved one is always the most difficult.

Before I finish, I just thought I’d recommend a television drama that Chris and I watched earlier in the week. In Plain Sight was based on a true story about a series of murders in Scotland in the 1950’s. It starred Martin Compston, (Steve from Line of Duty) as the ‘baddie’ and Douglas Henshall as the detective who is determined to bring him to justice. It is probably on catch-up TV if you missed it… I promise you, you will never look at ‘Steve’ in the same way again.

And, if like me you enjoy football, the Euros kick off today, only a year later than planned thanks to Covid. I’m English, so I’m backing Gareth and the boys of course, but good luck to whoever you support.
